Plastic Exterior Products

Plastic is a material of the future on residential home construction.. Plastic trim detailed, is also known as PVC or Aztec trim. With all of the different custom designed  trim pieces, and straight stock that they are now making. For example, Tongue & Groove, pre-made corner stock, decking, all standard sized trim boards. It is the best trim product to use on the exterior trim of your home and will last forever. It will never rot, warp, nor let bugs in. There are many advantages to using Aztec trim on your home. Cement clapboards are the next best thing to side a home with along side the Aztec Trim. As well as Fiberglass exterior products with a plastic coating on the outside work as well. Which is greatly used  for rounded posts for say; on a front deck, porch with a overhang. These are some of the products that are used to totally waterproof and support your home. They will last the longest in any type of weather mother nature decides to throws at us.

Interior / ExteriorWood Grades

I could go on and on about all of the different hardwoods, softwoods and how to use them appropriate in whichever situation your getting involved with. It comes down to if your trying to connect any sort of framing material to concrete where it will see any weather or moisture, you want to make sure you use Pressure Treated material (southern yellow pine). Pressure Treated material is also used in many landscaping designs. Which of course sits on the grass or dirt. Most of the time, Kiln Dried Pine is used on the exterior of homes for trim. Using the correct amount of paint or stain on K.D. material is important to seal it in from warping or soaking in water. If you want to step it up, you could always go with Cedar wood. Besides cedar wood doing a very good job on holding out moisture, it will act like an insect repellent for your home! Insects hate cedar wood. Now for the inside of your house. Hardwoods of any type depending on how you want to apply stain. Will bring out a variety of grains and beauty to your home. A few examples would be; Oak, Maple, Cherry, Mahogany or Poplar. Hardwoods used inside your home will be the most durable.

Paint / stain

Paint and stain is the most simple stage of building a house. There are of course some key points that you will have to pay attention to in the process. The first thing is always make sure your sheet rock is smooth with joint compound (mud) and a sanding block where necessary. For a solid Interior/exterior paint job you would want at least two coats of primer and 2 coats of paint ( you may be able to get away with one coat of paint, if its a light color ). Now for stain the best process is to go with is at least three coats to minimize the moisture soaking in, nor warping of your material. If your doing exterior grade material, its best to coat all sides of the material. This includes  siding and trim mainly.

Insulation

Home Renovation TIps: (Gian Construction Keene Nh residential construction, kitchen remodels..) Key elements of the building envelope is insulation because it can help dictate comfort for the family. Use of the correct R Value up to modern day code insulation thicknesses is energy and cost-efficient. A variety of plastic products may be the solution for your home, including plastic trim and foams: spray polyurethane foam and rigid foams made with polyurethane, extruded polystyrene and expanded polystyrene. In other words you can have closed cell spray in insulation or open cell. The Closed cell spray insulation is much more energy efficient and effective in most cases I've seen, when needed in a home.

Many people do not know rigid and blown foamed insulation is made of plastics which  often uses less energy and creates less greenhouse gas per application than traditional materials. Using some different techniques to insulate and seal your home the right way, could cut your energy use greatly.

Cement / Grout

Okay so you could choose between cement mix or mortar. Mortar is used to hold building materials together such as brick or stone. It is made up of a thick mixture of water, sand, and cement. Cement on the other hand is still a mixture of sand, cement, and water but it also contains rock chips or gravel which makes it much more stronger and durable then mortar. Now we have Sanded grout and thin set mortar. If you were to install tiles to an upright wall you would want to apply thin set mortar as your placing the tile in. The sanded grout of course fills in the tile seems.

House Wraps & Flashing

House wrap is one of the most important building materials you should have on your home now, in the modern day. A lot of the older homes I've seen seen use tar paperTyvek weather barriers are made of a continuous, nonwoven, non-perforated sheet.  The sheet is created by spinning extremely fine, continuous, high-density polyethylene fibers that are not fused together, to form a strong, uniform web.  So instead of holes, it creates a fibrous structure with millions of tiny pores that are extremely effective at holding out bulk water and air penetration, If you don't use this product on a home, it will create lots of rot or moisture issues. It could eventually build up enough to get in through the insulation and even get into some sheet rock in some cases. You should always have the proper Drip Cap, above windows and doors. As well have the correct size/type of metal flashing above deck ledgers connected to your home. Last but not least you should always know to look for the correct step flashing that connects roof lines into the siding or trim of your home.
